The Snow Lady Reviews: Psychonauts

My Introduction Paragraph: Hello everyone! This is YukiMizuno here with my first video game review article on dA! I will be giving out reviews on video games that I own, which is currently at one hundred and six games in total; so expect a lot of reviews! 8D These reviews will be officially called: "The Snow Lady Reviews: Insert Game Title Here…" because I wanted my reviews to sound catchy and get your attention… Plus, it is based off of my dA username; the Yuki part means "Snow", while the Mizu means "Water" (which does not play into the title, but I felt like mentioning it anyway). And… I am calling these reviews "The Snow Lady Reviews" because someone in a certain Pokémon chatroom likes to call me that when I come in, which I do not mind at all! So, I thought it would be a good idea to call my reviews this! Anyway… Let's get this review underway!

The Review:

The Game's Background: The game Psychonauts was made by a former employee of LucasArts named Tim Schafer, who also helped make The Monkey Island game series for LucasArts. Eventually when the executives of LucasArts decided to focus only on the Star Wars franchise of games, Tim Schafer decided to leave the company and made his own; which was Double Fine Production. And the first released game for Double Fine was Psychonauts. Unfortunately, the game did not sell well; despite the game being reviewed as Game of the Year in some reviews and websites… It is now currently available on Steam for the PC and for the Mac; it is usually purchased for around $9.99, but it is now on sale for $4.99 until Cyber Monday (AKA: November 28th) because of Black Friday/Cyber Monday (I'm writing this review on Saturday, November 26th…). You can also get it for download on your Xbox 360, if you have 3GB of free space, of course… Same goes for the computer version too.

Short Summary: The story revolves around a young psychic named Raz, who ran away from his home to pursue his dream of becoming a Psychonaut, who are an organization of psychics who help out in various other things around the world. He ends up at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, where they train people to become Psychonauts, and it is also a summer camp for psychic children. But, all is not right at the camp, and it is up to Raz to stop a dastardly plan that will threaten the stability of the world! But, in order for him to reach his destination of saving the world, he must travel through the subconscious minds of those around him so that they will be freed from their craziness/problems and can then help him get a step closer to where he needs to go.

Pros: I love the story of this game, as you can see how I explained some of it above. All of the characters (including the NPC's) are charming in their own, unique way, and it is so much fun to speak to them at any time; so don't try to ignore NPC's all the time. It is also a great, funny game that does humor right in a game; I think some other gaming companies (and even some animation companies) should take some notes on it, because they need it.

Cons: As for the controls for the game, I recommend that you invest in a USB controller (or a 360 controller, I hear that works as well on the computer), because the controls are hard to master on a keyboard… Well, it was hard for me on my laptop. Trust me; it makes the game a lot easier to play if you had a controller. The combat is okay for the most part, but I wish there were more powers for you to master instead of eight; maybe in the sequel… maybe. And the last few levels… oh god. They can get rather frustrating at any time when you're not prepared. Don't get me wrong, the first seventy-five percent of the game is really easy to handle, but the last parts are really, really… hard.

My Score: 9.5 out of 10! The reason for this score is because of the keyboard controls… Sorry for those who wanted it to be a perfect 10!

Conclusion: Anyway, I absolutely love this game to pieces! I would recommend it to everyone; especially to people who have a sense of humor (or dark humor, whichever one). Even though it plays better on the original Xbox, I don't think anyone should miss playing this game at all on the PC.

A Summary in [American] Haiku:

Raz come from circus,
To be Psychonaut agent -
Must save brainless camp…

(… God, I need to work on that… XD)
Here we are! My first review for my very long, personal project! :eager: I hope you enjoy reading it, and I hope it helps sway you to buy the game... :B
